Title: Seven Essential Family Ministry Essentials
Topic: Family Ministry Is Essential
Discussed by Megan Fate Marshman

Part 1 of 3
On July 27, 2015, we had
Dr. Michelle Anthony on to discuss “7 Family Ministry
Essentials”, which she co-authored with today’s guest,
Megan Fate Marshman, the Director of Student Resources and
Production for David C. Cook She has led and
challenged thousands of students in their faith at
Hume Lake Christian Camps where she currently serves as the Director of Women’s
Ministries. Megan is a skilled communicator and speaks nationally at churches,
conferences, and college chapels.
Michelle and Megan teamed up because they both have a passion for students:
Michelle for the younger generation and Megan for the teens and college
students. They knew that, together, they could shed light on important issues
for every parent. Megan says, “Students spend about an hour or two getting
Biblical instruction at church each week. There needs to be a partnership
between the family and the church… What type of environment can we create to
help leaders equip the students with what they need? And how can we help parents
help their kids?”
Parents, also be encouraged that you are doing the right thing by taking your
kids to church, even if they don’t necessarily want to go. They might not act
like they want your help right now, but in times of desperation, they will come
back to you, if they’ve seen a rhythm of you learning yourself.
Listen in as Megan Fate Marshman discusses “7 Family Ministry Essentials” during
this and the next two segments.

Parents need to start working on
their own lives before they can expect their kids to grow in their own faith.
Megan Fate Marshman believes that parents should allow God to be the spiritual
guide for their kids and encourage them to be dependent on Him. “A lot of
parents feel pressure to change or fix their kids, but God calls us to trust Him
to do that,” Megan says.
Be transparent with your kids and tell them how God saved you. Let them know
it’s okay to mess up, but when you do, it’s important to confess that sin and
turn to God for help. Pray with your family often. Teach your kids how to pray.
When you pray, Megan says, “Don’t say anything you don’t mean, think about Who
you are talking to, and talk slow enough that you’re actually listening.” Listen
in as she expands on this thought.

Too many teens and
college students (and even adults) have just enough religion to be convicted but
not converted. How do you encourage your student to
be excited to live for Christ and pursue Him in all things? Megan Fate Marshman
firmly believes that “Scripture is the Authority….This seems like a big 'duh
moment', but parents need to think about that.”
Do you open God’s Word regularly in front of your kids? Do you encourage your
kids to read their Bible, too? It is important to instill the importance of
Scripture while your kids are young, but don’t give up hope if you feel you
haven’t done a good job with this. Start now, no matter how old your kids are.
Ask your kids this question at the supper table tonight: How did you see God
today?
Listen in as Megan gives more questions you can ask your kids to encourage them
to dig deeper into their own spirituality. Do they really have a relationship
with God that will last? Click [here] to order a
