Topic: Pool Safety Tips
Discussed by Nikki Fleming
with Pool Safely (www.poolsafely.gov/)
Hundreds of children die each year in pools, spas, and drain entrapments. We need to do more. Drowning is still the leading cause of unintentional death among children ages 1-4 and the second leading cause of death for children ages 5-14.
Nikki Fleming is with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. She specializes in children’s product safety and serves as the team lead for the Pool Safely Drowning Prevention Education Campaign.
Questions/Issues Discussed:
Which populations are most at risk of drowning?
What are the latest statistics on drowning fatalities and drain entrapment injuries?
Why are kids between ages 1 to 4 so vulnerable for drowning and drain entrapments?
What are some simple steps families can implement for pool safety?
What is a “designated water watcher”?
Are there specific educational tools available to help parents with young kids?
Why are minority populations more at risk for drownings? Is this a generational issue?
