Title: Forced Annexation
Topic: Forced Annexation
Discussed by Allegra Hill
with Texas Public Policy Foundation (www.TexasPolicy.com)
Big city wonks advocate for the need of forced annexation, but do
the ends justify the means of denying property owners a vote?
New guest, Allegra Hill, is an attorney and a policy analyst with the Center for
Local Governance at the Texas Public Policy Foundation. First, she
explains that “Forced annexation” is the act of the government trying
to incorporate suburbs into one large city in order to receive more tax money –
all without a vote of the people. Allegra reminds us that “our country was
built on due process that is fundamental to our nation.”
Allegra goes on to explain that, with forced annexation, the process is denied
to the people. The city has all the power and the people are voiceless. She also
expresses a disbelief that the left is not more upset over this, as most
annexations focus only on the rich suburbs and leave out the poorest districts
which could benefit the most from the services which could be provided.
Furthermore, cities usually underestimate how much it will cost to annex new
areas and culminate more debt than is expected. Listen in as she explains this
problem and how “forced annexation” affects our communities. Allegra
